Lester joined Radio Tees in 1983 moving from Radio Aire in
Leeds. After he joined Tees, Alex narrowly avoided a name
change to "Red Lester" from programme director Donald Cline.
Alex presented a variety of shows which
included the Morning Show, Blues Show and the Holiday Show
Trains and Boats and Planes.
He left Radio Tees in 1986 to join the
new local station BBC Essex, where he was the first voice on
air. In 1987 he headed for the Radio 2 presentation
department.
Since
1990, Alex has been presenting BBC Radio 2's slot through
the night, which he fondly calls "The Best Time of the Day".
